Back then, we just worked with rags or cloths and the fluffier they were, the better. We used chalk diluted in a normal bottle of water, which we applied to the glass with a sort of net. We then removed the chalk mix with a cotton cloth. We called the solution “Weissling” – it was neither easy to apply or remove. It was very weather-dependent. We had to apply a thinner layer of chalk solution if it was dry, and a thicker layer if it was wet. Otherwise you wouldn’t get the desired result.
